On two albums released during her tenure in Los Angeles — 2009′s “It’s Spooky to Be Young” and 2005′s “Items You Won’t Find Elsewhere” — songwriter Meredith Meyer proved adept at airy, dreamy pop confessionals. A year ago, the Oklahoma native forsook L.A. to take up residence in New York, and life in the concrete jungle must be making her restless. Meyer’s new song “Target Practice,” comes from her new project Young Unknowns, who will release their debut EP in May. The EP was recorded with L.A.-based producer Bill Racine and features Ethan Walter and Bryan Percival on bass and Matt Arbeiter on drums. “Target Practice,” which was also appropriated by German trance artist Dennis Sheperd for his 2011 album, sounds almost as if it could have come from the U.K. in the late ’80s or early ’90s. Something about the bass …

Stream the song on buzzbands here: http://buzzbands.la/2012/01/27/stream-young-unknowns-target-practice/

“Migratory indie songbird Meredith Meyer and her new band are about to release an EP that could mark the Oklahoma City native as the next hipster love affair.

The 2012 release will be the first new material from Meyer since 2008’s “It’s Spooky to Be Young” seduced enough Los Angeles ears to land the track “Video Game Girl” on Indie 103.1’s list of the top songs of the year by L.A. bands. Now that she’s left the Pacific Coast behind for the bustle of New York, where she fronts the act Young Unknowns, she shirks pensive cellos for head- bobbing dance tracks haunted by her ethereal vocals…”

Meanwhile, Racine lends some of the “spooky” background-shimmery ambiance that helped make the first Rogue Wave LP such a standout, while putting Meyer’s gossamer voice right in your room like his work with Ride’s Mark Gardener and The Comas. When subdued cello or church organ are added, Meyer’s supernatural chamber pop falls into the hallowed realm of 4AD fodder too. Talent and great production is a combo that still can’t miss”

It took two years for David Lean to finish Laurence of Arabia. He set the philosophy in motion that good things come to those who wait. With Bill Racine (Rogue Wave, Mates of State) turning the knobs, L.A.’s Meredith Meyer spent four years creating her debut LP, It’s Spooky to Be Young. The affable singer has a confident tone, true to her romantic and classy demure. It’s Spooky to be Young is a dreamy offering dotted with genuine achy balladry and urgent mid-tempo rock. The crystal-clear production allows her ebbing voice to be dark and intimate, while also boldly avant-garde. Unlike some of the wilting female singers of the 1990s, think Fiona Apple or Natalie Merchant, Meyer is emotional without the whine and sings with a modern, effortless convention. Her versatility is admirable; Meyer is comfortable with a gentle piano nocturne (“Modern City Carol”) as she is beating up a guitar (“It’s Spooky to Be Young”).

Meyer’s voice is unquestionably the utmost strength of the release. Set a notch above the instrumentation, her voice is deeper than most female singers, and sharpened by a slight rasp. Her lyrics ache from one lovelorn parable to the next. “All Those Pictures” is where Meyer really finds a home: elegant balladry is paced with splashy percussion, reserved guitars, rising tides of strings and Meyer’s sweeping voice. Nodding to the haunting Mazzy Star, Meyer’s voice glides through a smooth wash of reverb. It’s Spooky to Be Young is dedicated to its ominous title. Meyer’s songs are relentlessly detailed patterns of sound. The litany of instruments are so intricately sculpted, it’s hard not to love the songs solely for their instrumentation. It’s no surprise she’s unveiled a spot as one of the most promising new artists of the year.
